Zombies Run! Yeah, I’m Five Years Late But Now Hooked!

I find it amazing that I had never heard of Zombies, Run! until…July of 2017. Yes, over five years after the release of the fitness based smartphone game. Now the keyword here is smartphone! I had the Samsung Vibrant in 2010 (too early), then moved on to the Nokia 920 & 1520 models (not supported). I finally purchased an iPhone 6 Plus in 2015. By then Zombies, Run! Season 4 was already in full swing.

For those, like myself, who may not be in the know about Zombies Run!, here is quick primer on the game. Zombies, Run! is an immersive running game/audio adventure for iPhone and and Android. Six to Start is the creator along with novelist Naomi Alderman (Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2017).

In 2015, Zombies, Run! became free-to-play for the first four missions. You can unlock a new mission each week (there are six seasons and over 200 missions total). This is to wet your appetite (I just finished the first mission) and entice you to purchase a monthly or annual membership. I’m already hooked and will probably stay with the month to month membership to see if my interest holds.

When you start your run and mission, make sure you have plenty of music on your playlist. Each mission is a combination of storyline and your own music. Zombies, Run! makes your running workouts way more fun. You listen to your songs waiting for a crisis to develop and it always does. The app uses your playlists and GPS so you do need the app to play the game and check your stats (See video below). You can also use their website to also check your game/run stats (see 2nd video down).

Virtual Running? Virtual Races? For Real?

To be honest, until recently I had never heard of virtual running or virtual races. If it wasn’t for on an ad I came across, as I was scrolling down Facebook (mobile version), I probably still would be in the dark about these events.

Virtual races are just like traditional races with a shirt, medal, and bib except you can run, walk, hike or even run on a treadmill! You can run wherever or with whoever you want. Racers report their time and then a medal is mailed to them for completing the race.

I have been slowly training for the Honolulu Marathon but that race (in December) is over five months away. There aren’t a whole lot of races I’m interested in before the marathon. I do plan on joining some 5K and 10K virtual races to kind of reward myself during my training.

Below, I listed some of the more interesting running clubs or races that I have encountered on the web. I will also highlight if these events are connected to a charity or charities because it always feels good to run a race and know you’re also helping those in need.

Virtual Running Club

They are a small group of people dedicated to bringing you fun and uplifting virtual race events. Vacation Races owns and operates Virtual Running Club. They have been running virtual races for 4 years now.

They are a race company that believes that (just like traditional races) a medal should be earned by finishing the race. Each of their races has a designated charity partner. A portion of your registration fees (around 50% of proceeds) will be donated directly to the charity.

Disney Running Shorts

I’ve been looking a Disney marathon or half-marathon to run at either Disneyland or Disney World. I found out that these races sell out quickly, quick as in the same day registration opens. So, if you want to run in a Disney race, there is the the Virtual Running Shorts Series that happens during the Summer.

Pluto’s the honorary host this year and he’s inviting everyone to join in on a summer of magical runs on a course of your choosing. It’s your chance to experience all the excitement of a magical Disney run right in your own backyard!

Whether you want to run with your pet, go solo, or run with friends, the 2017 Virtual Running Shorts Series is a great way to celebrate a summer filled with great Disney runs and lots of fun!

Virtual Run Events

Virtual Run Events was created in April 2015. Why? Because they LOVE running! And even more, they LOVE connecting with runners.  Shortly after creating Moon Joggers, they realized that they could encourage people to get out and get moving, AND make a difference throughout the world.

How? By creating fun and unique events to raise money for various charities. For each event a unique medal is designed, people are invited to get out and run or walk their own race, at their own pace and choose a charity to donate a portion of the proceeds to.

They have already raised more than $300,000 for charities from running events on their website. They are making a difference one race at a time!

Champion Men’s Vapor Heather T-Shirt – My Absolute Favorite Running Shirt!

  • Regular fit performance tee
  • Champion® Vapor technology delivers quick-drying performance
  • FreshIQ™ technology blocks odor-causing bacteria
  • Coverstitch seams prevent chafe and increase durability
  • Lightweight, ultra-soft fabric moves with you
  • C logo at left chest
  • Country of Origin: Jordan
  • Cheapest place to buy: Amazon

I know Champion doesn’t have the sexy name and reputation as Nike, Adidas, ASICS, ect but HEY! While ignoring the sticker price ($110+) for my running shoes, I’m more budget minded when it comes to running clothes. Now don’t get me wrong, my shorts and shirts need to be comfortable, light and definitely sweat wicking. Besides that, brand name, style or color is not a big issue for me. Okay, I’m cheap!

Browsing around Amazon, I found the Champion Men’s Vapor Heather T-Shirt at a bargain price! Sometimes, you can find these shirts at $10 if your timing is right. These shirts will run you $25 at Dicks Sporting Goods. With Amazon, I always try to buy just enough to qualify for free shipping which is a big deal, for me, living in Hawaii.

My reasons for loving this shirt are:

  • It feels like a t-shirt though it has a more custom fit.
  • There are many colors to choose from and I just keep clicking each color, on Amazon, to find the cheapest shirt.
  • The shirt is very lightweight, breathable (you can see the holes!) and feels like very soft cotton (a nice combination).
  • I love the feeling of soft cotton but not how cotton sticks to your skin when you exercise and sweat.
  • The holes are kind of an optical illusion because the pattern has areas of thicker weave and other areas with a very thin weave.
  • I am a huge sweater and there is not a shirt (on this earth) that will not be soaked during a run. The Champion Vapor dries
  • very quickly so if I can’t immediately remove my shirt, I can still move around in relative comfort.

Yes, I actually do own a couple of these shirts and plan on purchasing more!

At this price, you can stock up, up, up!
